Troodos Mountains trail accident

We had a situation whilst on an outdoor activity a few months ago in the Troodos Mountains where I had to treat one of my friends who injured his leg.

We were following a path called “psila dendra – pouziaris” a 9km trail that passes through deep forest and small rivers which is a 4 to 5 hour walk. In crossing one river my friend slipped on a rock and fell into the water and as soon as he stood up again I could see that his leg was red with blood. He had fallen onto a sharp rock that had punctured his leg leaving a 6cm long cut that was 1cm deep. The cut was not very deep but the bleeding was such that I decided to open my 35g Celox granules pack that I had in my med kit. It worked even better than I had imagined. The bleeding was under control as I started putting pressure on the wound. The wound was then secured with a military wound dressing.

The closest hospital Kyrepounta hospital, was more than 20km away from our point but we had also another hour to walk to find our start point and the car. In all that time I was monitoring his leg and there was no more blooding.

When we finally arrived at the hospital and entered the E.R. we told the doctor what happen but when I explained to him about the CELOX granules, the doctor told me he had no idea what Celox was, he was amazed. The doctor washed my friend’s leg and gave him 8 stitches in total and an injection with antibiotics.
