Where did CELOX come from?

Tuesday, January 31st, 2017

The origins of Celox go back to research carried out in Washington State in the 1980s and 90s where researchers first patented the use of chitosan to stop bleeding.   The ethical philanthropist and marine biologist Time Evans acquired rights to this work and put together a research team based in Bainbridge Island to develop the chitosan into a workable prototype of today’s Celox technology.

Tragically, Tim was diagnosed with a terminal illness in the early 2000’s, at which time he contacted his friend at Medtrade Products in the UK and asked him to review the work to identify one viable and beneficial product that could be brought into medical use.  It was clear that that opportunity was the ability stop life-threatening bleeding and Tim’s team became Medtrade Biopolymers, continuing to work in Washington and achieved the first FDA approval for Celox granules in June 2006.  Medtrade received the first order for Celox in December 2006 and happily Tim survived to hear the news.

We are very grateful to both Tim and his amazing team for their skills and commitment
